Scott Gilfillan

Joined in 2023 after studying cyber security and networks at Glasgow Caledonian University.

My first impressions of Baillie Gifford were made back in the summer of 2022 when I interned there. I’d come across the company during a talk they gave at my university, looking for internship applicants. I remember thinking that there was some of the best tech around here, and I wanted to be part of that.

First impression

After the internship, I knew that I had to get a job with the firm. My first impressions back then were, “Wow! This is where I have to be!” And when I try to describe what it’s like working here to my friends, I feel I never do it justice. I sometimes wish they could come and work here for a day to see what they are missing out on.

You are always learning at Baillie Gifford; it doesn’t ever stop. If you want to work somewhere where you are encouraged to learn as much as possible and want to take the first steps in your career, then Baillie Gifford is the place. The people and the culture will help you thrive in what you do.

Continuous improvements

There is a real feeling of everyone working together to get the best results in whatever we do. I am currently on the CSOC (Cyber Security Operation Centre) Team. Every day, we make security improvements to the infrastructure, watch for strange behaviour within our network, and investigate any out-of-the-ordinary behaviour to ensure the firm is safe from cyberattacks.

I have been working on a project for ingesting more data on unusual behaviour into our SEIM (Security Event & Incident Management) tool. I was tasked with bringing in more data from machines so that our investigations could be more granular and pinpoint events more easily. This has given me a great sense of accomplishment; it is something I have started and will (hopefully) finish before moving to another team.
